Monday’s Ramblings: The Ultimate Homemade List
Every parent (or nanny as the case may be) needs that go to homemade list. Sometimes homemade is just better. Othertimes, store bought is better, but you don’t have the time to run to the store before a tantrum explodes. For times like these, I hope this go to homemade guide can come to your rescue!
Bubbles
- 1 cup water
- 2 tablespoons light karo syrup or 2 tablespoons glycerin
- 4 tablespoons dishwashing liquid
Just mix and blow! Use an old Bubble wand, or when all else fails, use your hands :)
Chalk
- 1 cup Plaster of Paris
- 3/4 cup of water
- powdered tempura paint
Mix together the plaster of paris and the water. Add the tempura paint for your desired color. Now pour into a mold (anywhere from toilet paper rolls to small cups, or even ice cube trays) and let dry completely. When the mixture is completely dry, remove from molds and set aside for another 24 hours before taking it outside to play.
Paint – Face Paint
- 1 tsp. Cornstarch
- ½ tsp. Cold cream (or just a thick lotion)
- ½ tsp. Water
- food coloring
Just mix and paint!
Paint – Finger Paint (Baby safe)
- Yogurt
- Food Coloring
Mix your yogurt and food coloring together and let the little ones paint in their high chairs. You never have to worry when they shove their little colored fists in their mouths…if anything, be happy about the extra nutrients!
Paint – Tempura
- 3 tbs sugar
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/2 cup corn starch
- 2 cups water
- food coloring
Combine first four ingredients in a sauce pan until mixture warms and thickens. Let cool and pour into containers. Add food coloring to create different colors.
Playdoh
- 1 cup salt
- 1 cup water
- 1/2 cup flour plus additional flour
- Food coloring
Mix salt, water, and flour in saucepan and cook over medium heat until mixture is thick and rubbery. Then remove from heat and knead in enough flour to make the dough your desired consistency. Now just add your colors!
