Last night, 27 people left the New York Oyster Bay harbor on a yacht, set to celebrate the holiday with friends and fireworks, like may others all across the country. With a severe lack of life jackets, an overcrowded boat, and a bad stoke of weather, only 24 of the passengers returned to land. The yacht capsized at sea when an unexpected change of weather caused the waters to be too harsh for the overcrowded boat to handle. The 24 surviving passengers were rescued by nearby ships. And the other three you ask? They were children, aged 8, 11, and 12, who were later found dead in the abandoned vessel.
I hope this news report sends a reminder to all parents and nannies about the importance of boat safety. When any children are involved, please take extra measures to insure that all safety precautions are followed. If you attend an event where the host is not prepared, despite social protocol, it is okay to leave. Don’t forget, there are plenty of alternatives to celebrating the holiday. I personally suggest sparklers and stuffed strawberries :)
