Cooking with Abby: Homemade Goldfish

Actually, to be more specific about the title of this post, we didn’t make Godfish…we made Gold bunnies, Gold flowers, and Gold butterflies. I wasn’t about to run out to buy a mini fish cookie cutter when we already had adorable ones at home. Plus, Abby was forgiving of the lack of fish. As long as the crackers tasted like goldfish, her munching mouth wouldn’t know the difference :)

You’ll be amazed at how fast and easy this recipe is. You’ll have freshly baked “goldfish” out of the oven before your little one can swim to the kitchen! (Seriously though, this is actually faster than loading everyone in the car for a grocery store run to load up on Pepperidge Farm’s golden goodness)

Ingredients

  • 1/2 pound (2 cups) of grated cheddar cheese
  • 1 cup of whole wheat flour
  • 1/2 Tablespoon salt (if you want to skip the sodium, use a salt substitute)
  • 6 Tablespoons of butter

Directions

Start by letting your little one pour in the first three ingredients (cheese, flour, and salt) into your bowl and blend it all together. Next add the butter and blend with an electric mixer or food processor. Once the mixture takes the shape of dough, take it out of the bowl and let your little one help you roll it out onto a floured surface. You’ll want the dough to be about a 1/4 to a 1/2 inch thick. Now just take your cookie cutters and create some golden masterpieces. Abby personally liked using the Tulip cutter to make “footprints” across the dough. Now just bake your creations for 10-15 minutes at 400 degrees and let the munching begin!
