Cooking with Abby: School Lunch Favorites

Since school is on the mind this week, I thought I would share my favorite sites for healthy school lunches. While Abby is not eating lunches at school yet, I have a feeling we’re going to be doing a whole lot more picnics (Abby discovered the park near school today and I was completely unable to pull her away. In fact, she might still be there now…). So, school lunch or picnic lunch, these sites have incredible lunch ideas for the packing family.

100 Days of Real Food

This site has fantastic homemade meals which lack any hint of preservatives. So it’s no wonder that I think the School Lunch Roundup should be an automatic favorite on every parent and nanny’s computer. This page provides a list of 20 complete school lunches you can pack for your little ones. Let me share my favorites:

Lunch #1

  • Triple-decker apple & peanut butter sandwich
  • Organic cheese stick
  • Homemade butterfly-shaped whole-wheat biscuit
  • Frozen peas & corn

Lunch #7

  • Half of whole-wheat banana pancake sandwich with cream cheese in the middle
  • 2 whole-wheat ebleskiver “round” pancakes
  • Organic apples,
  • Plain yogurt mixed with a little maple syrup, vanilla extract, bananas, and homemade granola

Parents

While there is a lot to find on the Parents site, one of my go to articles is the one entitled Lunch is Served: Healthy School Lunches. Like 100 Days of Food, the Parents list provides various complete lunch menus. In addition, Parents adds a fun twist to some of their menus with specific themes. Check out some of my favorites:

Catch of the Day

  • Fish-shaped tuna sandwich with lettuce on whole wheat bread
  • 10 baby carrots with 2 tablespoons low-fat ranch dip
  • Small plum
  • 1/4 cup whole-grain Goldfish cracker

Fiesta

  • 1 cup bean salad
  • 1/2 cup melon wedges
  • Handful of whole-grain tortilla chips with 2 tablespoons salsa
  • 8 cubes of reduced-fat cheddar cheese
